Not usually, not for my regular non-agency clients. I work - at least a little - most weekends anyway and it doesn't bother me.

If it's more than 3,000 words, I would probably charge a weekend/rush fee of 15%.

... on the job and on the client. For my regulars, I generally don’t charge a higher rate for urgent or rush jobs. If it’s a new client I would be more inclined to increase my rate.

I must say though that I rarely get really urgent translations on a Friday afternoon and in the very rare occasions when this happened I was offered more money upfront. I have no problem with weekend work (that's the beauty of being a freelancer and to be honest I do prefer taking days off during the week when everyone else is working) but the majority of my customers do not assume that I work weekends, quite the contrary...

These are two questions in one Nov 29, 2014

An urgent job and a weekend job are two different things. Personally, I feel no difference between weekdays and weekends, and so my charge is the same 365 days of the year. I would only impose an urgency surcharge when the job encroaches on my sleep or personal plans, or requires some other inordinate effort, and if I do, it would then be 50-100%, certainly not 15%.

For a regular customer Nov 29, 2014

I would not charge since it would be 'goodwill' providing that the job is not too long, that is - I feel you have to take the rough with the smooth with regulars. However, if on average there is too much 'rough' in the relationship, then a higher rate or a rethink is needed.

If I get such a request from a less regular customer, say, one who remembers me once or twice a year and they ask me on Friday afternoon to deliver a job for Monday morning, then I will feel no compunction whats

If I get such a request from a less regular customer, say, one who remembers me once or twice a year and they ask me on Friday afternoon to deliver a job for Monday morning, then I will feel no compunction whatsoever in asking for at least 30% on top of my highest rate. If they really need my services, they will pay. If not, I get some rest over the weekend.

However, I often question the 'urgency' of asking someone to work like this - just last-minute planning, either that or the customer hates translators.
And, imagine what the answer would be if you asked a lawyer the same question. At least double or triple, I think.

I don't work weekends unless I'm planning to take days off during the week instead. No need to sacrifice one's entire life to earning money for the taxman.

With David Nov 29, 2014

I'm with David. I used to work on weekends without extra charge. Now I need to slow down, I'm currently taking a break, and when I start again in the new year: no more work on weekends. That's when I need to rest, recharge, and do something fun for both my physical and mental health.

I am with David and Tina on this one. I don't work at weekends, regardless of extra fees. Weekends are entirely for my family, who don't get that much of me on workdays.
