I have become friends with people I advised on how to get started as a freelance translator. And I have advised a lot of newbies, particularly students (I taught translation at Georgetown University for 14 years).

My son and his wife both followed me into translating, not with any particular encouragement or advice from me, though I did give their names to one or two agencies.
I've shared TMs and we occasionally help each other out with terminology.
And I know the CAT software better!

I started freelancing quite late in life after a good 20 years as in-house translator. By then all my friends and relatives had found their way into established professions. One of my daughters is also a translator working in-house. Only time will tell if she will follow the same steps…
