Why not? Jul 2, 2015

This is a great source of potential client, a perfect networking tool. One can`t simply ignore this phenomenon, by the way.

No Jul 2, 2015

Somehow I can't imagine my customers - large companies, banks and universities - sourcing translations on Facebook

Oh look, Chris posted a hilarious meme, let's send him our annual report!

But if your market is birth certificates, why not.

Unless you count proz. I'm not touting for custom anyway, I can barely handle the work I already have...

Do you consider LinkedIn social media? Jul 2, 2015

In that case, yes. Although it's not really 'advertising' but just being there.
Otherwise, no and don't plan to.

LinkedIn Jul 2, 2015

I use LinkedIn for work and Facebook for personal contacts. There are a few overlaps, but I prefer to keep the two separate. My clients aren't particularly interested in my holiday snaps, and my friends and family are not too bothered about specialist translation issues. I also looked at the Russian 'Vkontakte' recently but it seems to be designed more for personal use than for business purposes.

LinkedIn Jul 2, 2015

As others have said, being on LinkedIn is essentially advertising. Some of my clients are on my LinkedIn site and I network with colleagues there. While I don't think of it as a important source of work, it's a presence, and I think translators who are avoiding LinkedIn would do well to reconsider.

I try to discourage colleagues from getting on my Facebook site, though there are a few. Today a translator wanted to Friend me on FB and I told her that I would be delighted to network w

I used to be more active on LinkedIn, but don't have the time for it any more!
There is barely time to check out KudoZ some days...

ProZ Jul 2, 2015

Isn't ProZ a social media? If so, yes, I use it to promote my job, as well as some other similar websites dedicated to language services.

I'm thinking about LinkedIn. But I can't stand Facebook. It's chaotic and annoying.

No I don't and I don't like that idea Jul 2, 2015

I think it just shows that I am a jack of all trade kind who try to grab attention of passer-bys. Social media is often for private matter and I don't link private life and work together. I don't like it when some agencies send me messages asking me to like their facebook, blogs, etc and so I can be familiar with them and have projects from them. I also notice those did that never have a project for me or a decent offer.

I never connect professionalism and seriousness with social media. Even LinkedIn is not a good example of social media for me as I got swamp with invitations from unknown people and from totally strange trade. Nowadays, people live so fast they forget that they are maybe seeing and buidling fakeness by doing that. Joining associations is a good way to me but it is just not social media.

I wouldn't call it advertising Jul 2, 2015

I have accounts on Twitter and Linkedin, but I see it more for social media and networking, rather than direct advertising about my services.

I would call it "making my presence felt." But, then, it's all a matter of semantics, isn't it.

LinkedIn - I use this for my online profile. I'll send the link to my LinkedIn profile to potential or new customers or to existing customers to notify them of updates that they might be interested in.

Facebook - is for family and friends. But there are a few translator groups that I belong to where we can swap notes, post questions or discuss topics on a franker and friendli

I would VERY much doubt serious clients if they contacted me via Facebook.

Advertising and Marketing Jul 2, 2015

Most of my client pool is already on social media, like Facebook and Ello.com. Those sites let me interact with my clients and keep up to date on industry news. My YouTube channel lets me show off my skills and knowledge so my clients can see what I do and how I do it.

You can buy advertisements anywhere, targeting any market. I don't think there is really anything special about doing so on Facebook. Marketing, though... That's where the potential is.

I consider ProZ or Linkedin as professional networking platforms rather than social media. Jul 3, 2015

My current client profile and the client profile I'd like to have in the future is not one that would look for translators on Facebook (which is so far the most common social media platform when it comes to find new clients. I know many who do advertise on social media though.
