Most of the time, one monitor is enough for my purposes. If I ever need more than one, I can use one of my laptops.

I like the idea of 2, but I mostly work on my laptop, and don't like being tethered to one spot so another screen can sometimes seem like a bit of an anchor.

The change to two monitors has made a world of difference. I can have source text, target translation, and various windows for research etc. all in easy view. My working desk is in an L shape type of configuration, but with an angle wider than 90 degrees.

and sometimes I feel this is not enough. Writing on the right-hand one and looking up reference information on the left-hand one.

I spent some months working only on my laptop, with a base in order to keep it higher, but now in my homeoffice I have two monitors (perfect for dividing windows and softwares) and a configuration very similar to the one described by Maxi, above, with a L-shape working desk.

I only have a 13 inch MacBook Pro, so I run a browser with my emails on that screen and Windows (for Trados) in a VM on a much larger monitor.
Converted last year and I'm not sure how I coped before!

Two work stations each with 2 screens. And it's comfortable, not too much.

I usually only use one monitor, but I use my laptop when I need 2 (as for pdf source text, etc.)

Maybe, but only a little...
I got into the habit of working with two monitors during my in-house days. Now I can't imagine going back to just one.
