For me, one of the great joys in being a freelance translator, after working in-house for many years, is precisely the freedom it gives me to work as I please and be my own boss.

It feels great when I get positive feedback from a client and of course it's an ego boost if they do, but coming back for more is enough for me.

I love finding the right word, so terminological research is a must.

I’m what you may call a “lifelong student” and this profession allows me to learn something new every (other) day!

It's a job where you are forever learning new things.
You are being paid for practicing your own hobby.

OTHER Aug 23, 2015

- Having my own hours to work;
- Good money in comparison to the money I would make here in Brazil working outside home;
- Being able to constantly exercise my English;
- Learning something new every single time.

1. Learning something new
2. Working my own hours
3. Creative Writing
4. Being my own boss
5. Making money by doing what I love
6. Positive client feedback
7. The "Eureka"-feeling after finding the perfect term.

Why wasn't "A combination" one of the options?

The most? Aug 23, 2015

Because you can't, by definition, like everything the most?.
I chose client feedback. I wasn't thinking only about feedback here, on LinkedIn or elsewhere, though those are nice to have. I was thinking of the gratifying feeling of having done a good job that's valued by the client and/or the users. I work quite a lot with text authors themselves so perhaps I feel that a litle more keenly than translators who work with agencies who work with large companies...

The other things are all important though.

Of course! Above all in a question like this, so common in this forum.
Anyway, I gave up saying this type of question is statistically null. Who cares for statistics. These questions are mostly just for the hack of it.

Running a business Aug 23, 2015

To be totally honest, I find myself leaning more towards the administrative and business side of being translator more than the actual translation process. I get excited whenever I find new ways to grow or expand my business, or when I find a way to increase my productivity.

I even like going over all my accounting and tax stuff (I think I have to blame my time as an interpreter for the accounting departments I worked with during my in-house days).

The challenge! Aug 23, 2015

Not that I normally accept subjects that are completely unknown to me, but often in a text that seems routine there can be terms which need long long researches. In these cases, I feel like a detective and I am really happy when I have finally found the right term. My last resort in the worst case being of course KudoZ. And sometimes, I am fortunate when I post a question here...!

I would not say it often happens I learn something new, after so many years. It happens, yes, but not every day and not even every week, alas! Depends naturally on the type of text you usually translate.

Then, of course, I love working my own hours and working from home.

Agreed, yet... what if I like all of them the most? All are equally important to me despite the 1. - 7. listing. All items are interchangable.

@ Gudrun

Thank you. This is where the Creative Writing comes in.
