That's probably why (at least at this early stage of the poll) the vast majority of "those who work in-house" selected the option "I don't work in-house" .

I worked in-house for 23 years. Most of all, I like the pension I earned and now currently enjoy. I also liked the job security, regular salary, having colleagues and other professionals around, and the travel: back in the day we traveled all over the place; my job took me to over 20 countries.

I worked for 20 years (1986-2006) as in-house translator and we had not only an excellent working environment but we just made up a fun, friendly and enjoyable team (boss included). It was a pleasure working with them and I do miss the camaraderie, the help desk (having them a phone away every time you have the slightest problem was… heavenly!), our parties... Like Muriel I like and enjoy now the pension I earned!
Because of the lack of office space in Brussels and the rising pric... Because of the lack of office space in Brussels and the rising price of land and building costs, when I retired in 2006 the EU institutions were thinking about offering some staff translators the possibility of being home-based and as far as I know the idea was abandoned… It would be the best of both worlds, wouldn’t it?

I worked in-house for about 5 years. It was definitely less stressful than being a freelancer, but I couldn't work in my pyjamas and take short breaks when I need to distract myself like I can now.
I guess it's true that we "can't have our cake and eat it too".

I loved the regular pay and benefits, but had trouble dealing with the new horrible boss who encouraged me to resign, because he didn't want to fire me so I wouldn't get a severance pay. The last 6 months at that company were horrible. Now, I am happy working from home and work keeps pouring in. I should have made the move sooner.

I have been working in-house for almost 2 years now. My goal is still becoming a freelance translator, possibly in the near future: I don't like having to report anything that I do at a boss or drive 60 km back and forth my house for example, and also having to ask someone a day leave when I need it - but it may also depend from the environment - I don't really enjoy the way my company is organised, nor its management.

I used to work as an in-house translator a few years ago. Unfortunately, it was a toxic environment and I didn't like it much. I complained to HR but nothing was resolved, so I left. The daily commute was terrible (1 hour and 15 minutes) and it simply wasn't worth it. I miss having a regular schedule and colleagues, but I'm fine where I am now.

I worked in-house for 20 years, though not as a translator. I will be entitled to a pension as well, and I also enjoyed very much having colleagues, etc. But the disadvantages of working in-house by far overlap the advantages. If God helps me, I will NEVER work in-house again.

I would never have succeeded as a freelancer without the five years in-house.
I think the colleagues and the moral support were the best part of it for me. I had been through a long series of temporary and unsatisfactory jobs and a period of night school as a way of life - with unsocial hours... and was generally fed up.
It was wonderful to find I actually fitted in. My colleagues taught me how to translate professionally, and the company sponsored my diploma. (More fre... See more I would never have succeeded as a freelancer without the five years in-house.
