Indeed! It's quite daunting at times. Especially when illness strikes.

Nowadays, my household income comes from my pension, just as for 20 years it came from my salary. Everything else I earn is either to help my daughters and grandchildren or to save up for a rainy day (wishful thinking!). But there were periods in my life where every part of my income came from my freelancing activities…

Doesn't that depend entirely how many people in your household are drawing an income? Perhaps "household" should have been deleted from the question.

A household could have as many or as few people as you wish.

I quit my former in-house job in the business management area in 2013, and never worked in-house again (and do not intend to). That changed the rate to about 75%. Right now, my income comes entirely from the translations.
My wife also lost her job last year, and decided to specialize in her field. But until she's finished, she is also helping me with the translations, and it is currently (temporarily) her only income, as well.

I believe the question is exactly to know about the household income, that is, the sum of the income of all people who live in your house. It also considers the possibility of the translator making part of their money as a freelance, and part of it with something else.
It is actually an interesting question, considering many translators, in addition to having another activity, may be married to someone who has another profession, and in some cases, like mine, have a son or daughter who also works in another area and also helps in the household income, or even other people, like a retired grandparent who lives with you, a nephew, a motherin-law, and so many other possibilities, who can also have their own income and help with the expenses.
So, I really don't see a reason for your "?"

Since I divorced 13 years ago, if I do not sleep, eat or with my children), I translate.
