All of the above. And my priorities may change from time to time. For example, if I'm flush, I won't look at the price so much, but if I've just had to fork out over a thousand euros in car repairs and/or fines, I won't be rushing out wallet in hand to purchase the latest "upgrade" for anything that isn't 100% screamingly urgent.

Same here.
My motto is 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', added to the fact that I am not very technically minded, although I consider new suggestions.
However, over the years I have seen lots of bright ideas, gadgets and thingummies, both digital and 'hard copy' or whatever, which simply end on the scrap heap because they cannot cope with all the complexities of real life.
If you have to do the hard work manually, then why let the machines do it when it finally is fun?
I have the technology I need and more, because the extras often come in the same pack. It has to be very convincing before I want anything new at all. Minimum hassle is the first criterion after that, and for something that is probably nice to have but not necessary, the price has to be quite small too. I want a fast, proportionally large ROI, or I am not interested!

All the above factors are important and must be considered before taking any decision in this respect.

I understand and agree with my distinguisghed colleagues and yes, the priorities may change from time to time, but even the latest "upgrade" for anything, if it consumes too much time to learn and/or requires general investment, can be moved back if the actual workload is too high. Just to be honest to myself and to others. And all of them promise "producing higher quality translations faster" - just take a look beside my post an ad ... To call an ordinary purchase or an expense an investment is ignorant at best and deceitful at worst. There is no need to use an underpaid salesman's tactic here.
An investment is never an expense. An investment expects a benefit, a utility, a monetary return by definition: you can invest in stock, bonds, capital goods, machinery, real estate, etc. and you can call it investment if you expect to earn money or a profit.

I am not totally against major purchases, expenses or investments, call them what you will, as long as they are convincing.
I have simply reached a point in my career where they have to be VERY convincing.
I am not sure I agree 100% with Mario about the word investment. I am quite happy to invest time, for instance, in things that bring non-monetary benefits, or at least benefits that are hard to measure in purely cash terms.

I'm not surprised. He's an accountant and he may just be using salesman's buzzwords.
Just because someone uses a word with the incorrect meaning doesn't mean we have to perpetuate its use.

I do not agree with Mario, sorry, but If I buy (invest my money) a new software that increases my daily throughput I am having a return in terms of money (same hours = more money or less time spent working = same money and more free time)

- the process of spending money in order to improve something or make it more successful
- something that you are willing to spend money on now because it will give you benefits in the future

IMHO, there is not a single factor that may be considered as the most importante one.
You have to considerer whether the price is nice and you will have return on your investment (what is the use of buying something that will be an additional cost with no return?), the benefits of working with it, and the time it takes to learn how to make the most of it (if it takes too long, well, that will be time that you will be spending without return, sometimes it just does not pay off...)

I would think that reasoning your position in an argument would involve more than quoting a dictionary. Reasoning requires giving reasons and facts, not quotations.
