It was the other way around: my other career(s) were a gateway to translation some 30 years ago...

Nah. In fact, I wish I'd got into full time translation a lot sooner than I did.

Like Muriel, it was the other way round for me. My legal career provided a gateway for me into my specialism in translation.

unless you count transitioning to "little old lady sitting in park café with big chunk of German cream cake", which is my future career plan!

I became a Search Engine Evaluator based on translator profile on proz.com and translatorscafe.com. They posted the job, I signed and accepted. But now I only focus on translating.

Just echoing the collective "no" above me.

Same here. It was more a "getaway from" than a "gateway to".

No, quote the opposite Aug 12, 2017

Several areas and experiences were gateways to my career as a translator. As soon as I decided to become a full-time translator, I also found out all other experiences were a lot worse than the current one. Using a translator's experience as a gateway to another career, or a freelance job as a gateway to a regular in-house job, is a big mistake, an "involution".
