I’m not working on anything for the moment May 20, 2020

I’ve just delivered a small translation FR-PT (350 words) for a regional organization convening its members for a general assembly in June and I’m waiting for a longish project EN-PT (11,000 words)…

I haven't had any work since the start of the month and I can only surmise that the coronavirus is the explanation for the downturn in demand.

Same as every year May 20, 2020

Currently on my desk: an annual report, some annual accounts, an annual supervision report, the agenda for an annual general meeting.

I'm sure there's a theme in there somewhere.

Regular jobs rock.

I'm currently translating software strings for my EDI client, which I've been doing for about 20 years now. However, they are often a bugger to deal with because there is usually a glaring lack of useful context to guide my decisions and there are always things cropping up which require feedback from the client, or someone who knows what things like arcane abbreviations stand for, or whether they should be translated or left as they are, which can vary depending on which country or client compan... So, it's a bit of both; something I am very familiar with, yet which is frustratingly unclear at times.

I am not working on anything right now May 20, 2020

I just fell down and broke my right arm. Yesterday I had to turn down a 16,000-word translation project from my best client.

... voluminous and challenging: an academic book written in that mannered Italian that some academics love to use.

I'm not working on a paid translation at the moment May 20, 2020

Today I'm about to finish editing and footnoting my late husband's memoir in Portuguese, which will be published by his university.

Two uncommon jobs May 20, 2020

I'm working on two jobs that are not common for me, which I don't like very much, but in the situation we are right now, refusing jobs is not advisable.
One is a subtitling job, something I usually avoid. Most of the subtitles have three lines in Portuguese and it's not humanly possible to reduce them to two lines, as the client wants. I know this will be trouble.
The other one is the translation of AutoCad drawings with big area maps with captions. It takes a lot longer to edit, for

But well...

Translating Spanish article into British English May 20, 2020

Just got a 2,500-word article about the impact of the crisis on working people and the poor in Ecuador. I do frequent translations for this particular org.
