I haven’t and I don't see what application it could have as one of the reasons I’m still translating at my age is to keep my brain working and learning new things, but I wouldn’t like to be on university professors’ shoes…

I am not entirely ready to admit our defeat yet.

I use it every day, it’s so smart and accurate. I just let it do the work while I’m watching The Simpsons.

I have tried it out of curiosity Mar 2, 2023

To see if I could use it in my work. It is not better than any other MT, you still need a human reviser to fix the text, even for technical writing. As for creative pieces, I would give it a 4/10.

New way of searching? Mar 2, 2023

Yesterday I watched a panel discussion about chatGPT and its use in localisation. The panelists were of the opinion that chatGPT's machine translation capabilities are not great compared to existing machine translation engines (apparently, chatGPT is rather slow). Personally, I can see that once the chatGPT model is updated with latest information it may be a useful way of searching. Personally, I can see that once the chatGPT model is updated with latest information it may be a useful way of searching. Why bother scrolling through the long list of results in a search engine when you can just ask chatGPT to produce a nice neat answer? As long as the answers are accurate, I would very happily switch to this new way of searching...Collapse

Err... no.
I'd rather scroll myself than trust that the machine reflects like I do.

Search engine Mar 2, 2023

I've used it a couple of times to ask for the meaning of acronyms and the possible translation. That was a good experience. Of course it helps if you are as accurate as possible in your question (giving some context for the acronym).

You obviously have to double-check the answer, but if the answer is the correct one it takes you like 10 seconds to find suitable confirmation.

So ChatGPT might be helpful in a sense that it may save you some time while doing research.

I am afraid to install it in any of my devices... it's probably there already anyway... it all sounds too creepy to me.

Never heard of it, looked it up but I don't trust it and certainly won't install it anywhere.
I don't mind doing my own searches and find out a lot of things that way, some of them irrelevant but often entertaining.

My clients can use ChatGPT if they want to, and some potential clients probably will try it.
When they come to me, they pay for my human touch, in some cases my personal touch. They expect the information to be accurate, not just 90-something percent likely to be correct according to an algorithm. It's a responsibility, but I do not use algorithms. I use my real intelligence and go to sources I am 100 percent sure will give me correct answers or a choice of answers, or show they are unable

Machines can be a great help - or they can be deadly dangerous if they are misused and not carefully managed. I believe there will still be plenty of work for humans if we use these tools properly, but take care not to be dazzled by them and keep them under control.

Exactly - the problem here is that, as far as I understand this program, you would only get an answer, without any references. Therefore, you'd have no way to know how reliable and trustworthy the answer is, so to confirm it you would need an old-fashioned search. I don't think that would speed things up for me, so I can't see myself using this for anything where accuracy is important.

Yes, I’ve recently used chatGPT to ask some explanation about a very technical term.

His anwser was very clear and very usefull.

Then I’ve done reseaches on the web to confirm the explanation and the answer of ChatGPT was right!

No, I haven't used it for anything work-related.

Out of curiosity, I played around with it and find it quite fascinating. The other day when writing a newsletter article for a club I am a member of, I struggled to come up with a snappy headline and some funny picture captions. I told ChatGPT what the article was about and asked if it could think of a few puns on the topic and a good headline and it did come up with some good ideas. I can see its use for that kind of brainstorming.... See more

I can see its use for that kind of brainstorming.

I also asked it to come up with a comedy routine on a certain topic in the style of specific comedians and the results were amazingly good.

Journalists will probably be replaced by AI long before us translators are.
