I would say the satisfaction lies in the fact that I get paid well for something I really like to do.

I would never continue this job if the resulting money would satisfy me more than the work itself, though.

The other way around I would also never translate just for fun. There would be much more exciting things to do with my spare time.

Definitely the job Apr 29, 2025

Before I started translating, I had plenty of jobs which I only did because I needed the money. Even then, I found some satisfaction in getting them done, and in meeting good colleagues and other interesting people. That is working life in many cases.
Having a job that you really like some of the time or most of the time is a privilege!

But yeah, it is a job. I do occasionally work pro bono for a good cause, but I find the jobs interesting in themselves.

I'm happy to say that I enjoy translating and hope it will continue for a long time, but I wouldn't translate most of work if I didn't get paid! If I won the lottery it would be nice to translate some unknown author or poet.
