I have a logo. I made it through some logo creating app in the beginning of covid, when I had some time on my hands thinking the translation world was about to end (glad to say I was proven very wrong).

I guess it contributes to a more professional image, but is it important to have for a freelancer? Absolutely not.

I suppose it can look more professional, but nowadays, when everyone and their dog has a "brand", I sometimes feel wary of people offering their services in a way that is too slick and polished-looking.

It might help you stand out from the crowd, but I suppose it’s not what makes a client select you, I suspect that nowadays it's not even about the quality, but rather the price...

Yes, It is important! May 15, 2025

Logo represents your brand. So when people see your logo, they can remember you better, your services, and your social media.

One of the first things when I started May 15, 2025

I think it can be very helpful to have a descriptive company name and a logo, because it looks professional and makes you as a freelancer easy to recognise and remember across channels. One of the first things I did when I had decided to become a freelance translator was to think of a business name and register a web domain. A few weeks later, I made the logo.

A logo is not a brand May 15, 2025

Let's not confuse a logo, which is a graphic creation better left to professional graphic designers and typographers, with a brand, which is a generic or made-up word to represent a corporate identity. Individuals don't have brands, only companies and organizations.

The concept of “personal brand” is sheer nonsense.

Business names and logotypes (logos) May 15, 2025

Back in the dotcom era, everybody was easily tempted to build a webpage, a logo and come up with a business name or domain name. The web design packages of that day almost made every user feel like a graphic designer. Only it was an illusion.

Logo design is best left to professional graphic designers. Unless you study graphic design and have the chops and the competence to design logos. A rare combination for translators.

A business name is a more fun thing to come up with for everybody. I must have a small list of names I came up with and used in my business cards over the years. The lesson I learned is that my clients never cared much for my business name, only for my own name as a competent professional to serve their needs.

Many years ago, I passed on the name of a colleague to an agency and when I asked them, some time later, if they'd used her services, they said no. They hadn't even contacted her. The reason they gave was that the colleague's website made it look as though she was, or at least might be, an agency - with a logo and what might have sounded like a company name. They certainly weren't going to give a job to a person who might then steal their client. The logo and name lost this colleague access to an excellent agency I worked with for over twenty years.

In another, similar case, a colleague declined to contact a translator I'd suggested. The reason was the same. In this case, however, the translator had intended to become an agency herself, so maybe the colleague was right not to trust her. In any case, she didn't get the job and, as things turned out, never became an agency.
