I mainly listen to music when I'm at home, so my music comes either from my computer or, when I'm in full listening mode, my turntable.
Outside, my smartphone is my source of music, also when driving, so I guess that would be a combination of smartphone (source) and car stereo (playback medium).
When I am working I need some background noise, but I find that some musical genres interfere with my ability to focus on my work, except for some classical music. My flat has a radio system that I have tuned to the classical music channel. The speakers are right next to my computer and the sound is great. Sometimes I listen to (or watch) the Intermezzo channel on my television, except when I'm revising my work or proofreading others' work: I press the mute key!
A classical music station or more popular music station, depending on my mood and activity (popular music while cleaning, classical music during lunch).

Call me a boomer but I still use a complete Hi-Fi system... | | | | | An old-fashioned kitchen radio | Jun 12, 2025 |
As long as my favourite radio station will broadcast on FM, I'll probably use my kitchen radio around the house; just using computer audio when I'm at work. When its adapter was broken, I was really sad and kept on searching in local thrift shops until I had found another one with the correct specs

Laptop/smartphone with a portable speaker (if you're looking for recommendations, Bose SoundLink Flex is truly wonderful).

followed by Mac/laptop and then smartphone, sometimes bluetoothing stuff to the DAB radio.
BTW, there's also internet radio.

I wouldn't be able to tolerate the mindless chatter and ads on the radio. Even in my car, which I recently sold, I preferred listening to CDs. Or maybe the classical music or EDM (dance) stations - not my favorite genres as a punkrocker, but those stations featured little talk.

These days, I prefer to listen to Spotify using my smartphone and in-ear headphones. I have a large playlist of favorite songs which is optimized for the perfect mix of familiarity and novelty, in order to keep me alert without distracting me too much while I'm working. My offline music collection on my computer is missing the novelty. Then I also have shorter playlists for topics, moods and genres.
I don't listen to music while working everyday. Sometimes, when I really need to focus, I wear broken headphones just to block out any noise.
I know it's fashionable to hate Spotify because it pays artists very little, but it's nonsense to suggest that it sucks for users, as music journalists sometimes do. One relevant advantage is that you can find songs in any language from across the world. How often do you hear songs in Punjabi, Amharic or Finnish on 'alternative' music stations? On Spotify, I can even find amateur electronic compositions created by my friends. Generally I find new music by looking up what young people are talking about on social media, besides new releases from old favorites. Spotify also reminds me when my favorite bands are performing near me. ▲ Collapse | | | | Liena V. Летонија Local time: 02:12 Член (2014) француски на латвиски + ...

As a recent convert, I second this. I switched to it as an effort to ditch YouTube and I absolutely love it! I do wish artists were paid more, but it has restored my love for music and has been a fountain of many wonderful discoveries lately.

May I suggest Tidal as an alternative?
The advantages:
- I don't know about other countries, but in Germany, the Tidal HiFi plan costs the same monthly price as Spotify Premium
- Lossless streaming (if available on the artists' side) as opposed to Spotify's glorified MP3s
- Higher payouts per stream
- No withheld payouts to small artists until they reach a certain threshold
- Basically the same discovery/suggestion algorithm
The disadvantages:
- Slightly fewer tracks overall
- Less user-friendly apps; the desktop app is mostly good, but the smartphone and especially smart TV apps are very unwieldy | | | | Novian Cahyadi (X) Local time: 06:12
I actually don't like it when people play their music through speakers, so I won't do the same to others. For me, it's power metal music on my computer played through a pair of headphones.
Don't have a smartphone, don't have a turntable, don't have a gramophone, don't have a Hi-Fi system. As some of you might already know, I hate owning stuff. I'm the type who won't be buying things unless I really have to. And I need a computer to, you know, make a living. Might as well usin... What you're describing here is not a healthy way to live, kidder. Do yourself a favour and drop such childish Tyler Durden-esque ideas while you're young (in other words, grow up ffs!) Get in touch with the Proz Empowerment Team and get yourself empowered, like right now! They're here to help you every step of the way in this wonderful, enriching journey.
As for Power Metal, well.. I'd say more 'power' to you, but then I used to listen to Power Metal myself as a kid (Running Wild, what?) But I'm happy to report that I grew out of it soon after seeing the Pantera members in poofter outfits, which was a major wake up call for me.
So Power Metal is no substitute for empowerment, and just cos you got the power that don't mean you got the right:

Btw, I've been listening to this Indonesian band for the last few weeks, very powerful stuff:
