A decline?
That's an understatement
I've noticed a complete earthquake. A revolution. A cataclysm. 75% of my clients are just gone. I'm hanging in there thanks to a couple of good ones, but with one eye on changing jobs.
I fear the translation sector as we have known it will not exist in a few years. Most clients will just rely completely on AI. Many already are.
I’ve noticed a decline since the pandemic, but some of my long-standing customers are still sending work. They probably are as resilient as I am…

Less regular translation jobs, but more MTPE jobs, so overall steady flow. As expected.

Since January, things got crazy here. My main client moved to MTPE and started to send me less than half of the volume they used to. I really thought I would have to find another thing to do in order to pay my bills.
I always worked with 4 or 5 reliable clients, but now I'm forced to work with almost 10. My cash flow became volatile also, as I'm having to deal with various payment terms.
Anyway, from my perspective, the market is more challenging than ever.

Yes, my main client (a Us translation agency) who used to send me interesting translation projects almost constantly for the last three years only sent me small projects in the first months of the year and the work has stopped since April.
Such client told me that their major clients filed for bankruptcy and that their work volume in my language pair has decreased.

I am trying to get new clients, but I I'm noticing there are fewer searches from translation agencies and fewer job postings on the ProZ job board and other job boards, and consequently, fewer opportunities than a few years ago.
The market is very challenging and I am also thinking about changing job. ▲ Collapse

Last year I noticed maybe a 20% decline. This year it's more than 50%. I was planning to wind down toward retirement in about 3 years and I basically feel like I need to either really scramble to figure out how to keep working or anticipate an early retirement and make that work somehow. For almost 15 years I was in a position of turning down job offers every week because I didn't have availability. Now I find myself with barely anything to work on most days and 2-3 days where I've got a decent ... See more Last year I noticed maybe a 20% decline. This year it's more than 50%. I totally agree with you. My main client has stopped their translations in every language! And the workflow of the others has declined alarmingly. Translations (even creative translations) are called "MTPE editing" now and the payment is halved in comparison to a few years ago though you still need the same expertise and amount of time ... Job offers I get are below the German minimum wage and I wonder which translators can pay their bills with this. All jobs consist in correcting AI output and are not adequately payed.
I really think about reorienting myself professionally after 20 years. It's a pitty because I have gained a lot of experience and knowledge on every level and I like my work.

Irrespective of one's personal situation, the fact that this post has 19 likes tells a story in itself.

19 of his colleagues like to see Justin suffer likely because of his MateCat exploits in the last decade, which has ultimately brought about his downfall.

Have all of you actually read the question?
I agree that the demand has declined for some years now, but on this lower level, I have seen a rise since the beginning of 2025. (Whatever this is worth.)
