I’m a ‘frequent flyer’ of the Quick Poll and have never noticed anyone being afraid to speak their minds. Quite the contrary, since translators are adults, professionals, educated people who are used to dealing with criticism... | | | | Lieven Malaise Белгија Local time: 11:50 Член (2020) француски на холандски + ...
I understand the choice for anonimity on political forums if people are living in certain countries, but in the case of Proz I believe discussions would be way more valuable if everybody would fully own their words by being open about who they are and what they are.

To give an exemple: it's sometimes very unclear if forum users are fulltime in this business, only parttime or are hardly active as a translator (even after several years). This matters a great deal because, with all due respect for parttimers: they live in a completely different world compared to translators that are solely relying on freelance translation. Discussions about rates, availability and work load, a.o., can never be valued properly if you don't know the status of the person you are discussing with.
Besides that I believe anonimity leads to less civil discussions, because it's way easier to be impolite or rude if nobody knows who you are. Social media are often cesspools and anonimity has got a lot to do with it.

Many topics are discussed in the polls. They are not all relevant to everyone, and many users of Proz.com ignore them totally. For some of us they are a daily pause for thought, perhaps a smile, perhaps a sigh.
If anyone is nervous for any reason about the topic of the day, they can just skip it, refrain from voting, and move on.

I don't understand the question. Is it asking if polls or the forum should be anonymous? Anyway, you're free to use a nickname or even register with a fictive user name. | | | | | Definitely not | Jun 24, 2025 |

in asking unclear questions?
What exactly should be 'anonymous'? And in which way?
The votes on poll questions? Are they not already supposed to be anonymous - in the sense that (unless you are the site admin) you can see only the totals of votes, not who voted for what individually?
Or is it the participation in any thread in the Forums section that should be 'anonymous'?

How on earth would THAT work??? Not attaching the poster’s user name to each individual post? If THAT is idea, it would be one of the most counterproductive I've heard in ages.
I'm really curious to hear from whoever dreamed up this poll question an explanation about the exact technical details in setting 'anonymous Proz forums'!

I'm not afraid to speak my mind, but this time - as with a number of recent polls - I wasn't given the chance to register a vote as the poll had closed before I even saw it.
As for making the forums anonymous, that is a ridiculous idea and I'm surprised anybody supported it. It would just be an open invitation to trolls and abusers. | | | | Daryo Local time: 10:50 српски на англиски + ... | You meant to say 'closed'? | Jun 25, 2025 |

You meant to say 'should NOT be disclosed' i.e. 'should be closed' to others not logged in into proz?
Although there is still this option that outlived its usefulness long ago - to ask Kudoz question without registering first as user - you can not participate in forums without registering first.
So forums are already 'closed' / limited to members as far participation is concerned.
But as of now anyone with an internet connection can read the forums - if they have any interest in them. You propose that only logged-in users could read the forums? Some forums do operate that way, but I don't see the advantage in turning Proz forums into 'internal forums' that can be read only by logged-in members.
Yes, that's what I meant: Posts should only be read by members, sorry for mistaking the verb (you see, I still do not use DeepL...). | | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: This forum should be anonymous because people are afraid to speak their minds. | Trados Studio 2022 Freelance | The leading translation software used by over 270,000 translators.
