It doesn’t affect me. Winter in Lisbon, where I have been living since 2015 after 30 years in Brussels, is generally mild, temperatures can go down to 10 °C but we also enjoy many sunny pleasant days, especially when compared to the Belgian gloomy weather…

Yes Oct 28, 2025

Yes, it does. I hate it and feel rather miserable when we switch to winter time and it gets dark earlier and the days seem shorter. I love the long spring/summer time though I feel tired till I get used to it. Naturally, I have to get used to it but still feel it throughout. I breathe a welcome sigh of relief in March as I know we're close to switching to summer time and the days seem longer. Time for loads more.

Winter solstice Oct 28, 2025

That's the time I'm beginning to wait for spring and observing how days are becoming longer. And no, the colder time of the year doesn't make me depressed. Someone may joke about St. Pete weather—one of the few 'facts' that outsiders usually know about my home city (my ex-girlfriend from Arkhangelsk knew more about St. Pete than I do). A popular joke tells a story of how one day our denizens noticed an unusual bright spot in the sky that they'd never seen before. The actual fact is that our we... See more

The actual fact is that our weather is no different from that in Moscow or any other city in most of the European part of the country. It's even similar to Murmansk weather, which is just a bit crazierCollapse

Winter what? Oct 28, 2025

Autumn and winter are my favourite seasons. I love the fresh air, all the colours, the sound of leaves crisping under my feet and that particular smell, even in the rain. Also cozy nights at home – yes, they may start at 3pm in December, but after that it is great to really feel how each day is becoming longer and longer again and the light is so beautiful in January. I am also very much looking forward to snow and ice. There hasn't been a lot of it in past years, but my outdoor skates are alr... See more

The SAD syndrome is such a crock Oct 28, 2025

I don't get the winter blues or the silly SAD thing, so typical in America. For those who don't like acronyms, SAD stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder and they claim it's a real thing. To me, it's not, it's a cultural device like any other. People feel conditioned by their American culture to feel down on Christmas holidays when they're alone or away from family, a situation accentuated by shorter and colder days.

Autumn is my favorite season, followed by winter. I wouldn't go as far as saying “the colder, the better,” but nothing beats cozy blankets and sweaters.

I like winter Oct 28, 2025

I like winters, after all december is my birthday. But i have the fortune to live near the Adriatic sea therefore winters are not that harsh.
My grandpa used to say "In winter, there's no need to heat the room instead you should dress and cover yourself more."

Not at all! Oct 28, 2025

I live in the tropics, so I am not affected by the winter blues, as a colleague mentioned. On the other hand, I have to say that a sunny or rainy day can affect my mood definitely. So, I would suggest walking, hanging out with friends, and going to social events. That could change our Grinch mood for good.

Please send some my way Oct 29, 2025

I’m so sick of tropics, its annual wait for hurricanes (I lived through three), 7-8-month long 24/7 lockup under air conditioning avoiding +35 and 88% humidity outside. Extensive travel, including nearly annual intentional hunt for St Pete’s falls and winters, was the only savior. My fantastic prime client of 26 years is the only anchor. No retirement in Texas for sure. Maybe in St Pete…. Or Cape Town (Hout Bay)

SAD Seasonal Affective Disorder Nov 9, 2025

Yes. I feel these changes. Seasonal Affective Disorder is real for me. I live in the North East Coast of the United States and the days are now shorter leaving more time for darker evenings.
