Although, typing speed may differ according to the language I am typing in.

I started out with a typewriter, first mechanically, then electrical. Since I started using a computer my speed has increased. Or least it seems like it to me.

As I have been translating full-time for over 35 years (and typing well before that), I suppose my speed has increased over the years for having to type (almost) every day. However, when I am very tired, it seems that my fingers do not want to obey me and certain words (always the same) come out misspelled. I never learned to type "properly", but I type fast. I learned to type the hard way, by myself, on an old-fashioned, heavy, slow and very noisy typewriter in the 1960s. I don't use all my fin... See more

Anyway, clients don't care about the number of fingers I use…Collapse

Time wasted? Nov 15, 2025

We had flexible automated training systems in secondary school, which basically meant that your whole class would retreat for a weak or so into a designated space to learn something effectively. There was a relaxation room where we were required to spend some time in complete darkness while listening to utter baloney, a dining room, and different study spaces. We studied English and ten-finger typing there. Then we had a record management course where we learned to type standard document forms. ... See more

There was a relaxation room where we were required to spend some time in complete darkness while listening to utter baloney, a dining room, and different study spaces. We studied English and ten-finger typing there. Then we had a record management course where we learned to type standard document forms. Just imagine what it felt like to draw a table on a mechanical typewriter. Then my mom bought me a typewriter for study. It sounded like an AK rifle, only my typing speed was a little slower. Don't know if it has changed over time. I type fast enough for my liking, that's it. But the time I spent with a typewriter could have been put to better usesCollapse

one way or another it's more than good enough for me.

It was too difficult to find in Belgrade anyone who could type in French my handwritten translations, so I learned to type on a mechanical typewriter with 10 fingers, nearly as fast as professional typists.

That mechanical typewriter did make the kind of noise that would turn any Health & Safety busybody apoplectic. And required strong fingers.

But learning myself to type was far from being 'wasted time'

But learning myself to type was far from being 'wasted time' - turned out to be quicker and more reliable than searching with a loupe for a French typist in Belgrade.

Not to mention that later switching to electrical typewriters then computer keyboards was a piece of cake.
