One of the many problems facing education in Portugal is the shortage of teachers in certain subjects (an ageing teaching workforce and a profession that is unattractive due to its demanding and exhausting nature). I wonder, somewhat ironically, whether AI will solve this problem...

Update? - No, radical reform!
Nov 23, 2025
A radical reform of all language teaching has been needed in most countries for at least the past 50 years.
The arrival of AI just makes that reform a lot more urgent - and probably a lot more difficult to achieve.

Don’t get it
Nov 23, 2025
I don’t get the question. If a baby is born in the cloud with a device in its tiny hands, and will continue to converse in the cloud for the rest of its life, AI as a teacher will suffice.
On the other hand, if there’s some chance it’ll converse with real people, it will need a real human teacher.
When AI is your only educator, you are running a chance of drafting polls such as this one. Don’t do it.

It can be, but it is not mandatory.
Nov 23, 2025
AI can help the teacher's productivity and solve many problems that students have, but the language learning principles are the same. We learn in the same way as we did 3,000 years ago, so we have to spend so much time reading and listening in the target language. So, there are no shortcuts!
