Since TurboTax Home and Business version is good only for self-employed freelancers and does not cover S corp, I must buy two downloadable TurboTax SW versions every year, and both come with great discounts from Amazon on Black Friday. This is not a purchase for pleasure, so why shouldn't I spend as little as possible?
Other than that, I'm in full agreement with Teresa.

May be true but now Black Friday business is huge in countries I know, in Hungary but especially in the Netherlands - I guess in some other EU countries as well. So the question had its relevance for some but not as a holiday. Advent starts tomorrow, Santa has already arrived in the Netherlands, all these are irrelevant but nobody cares about that - Black Friday deals came at least several days before now and will continue into December.

Nowadays, Black Friday in the US isn't really just a day anymore; it basically lasts a whole week or so. Thankfully, the days of door-busting crowds and mayhem are long gone. I will never forget the sight of people camping outside stores overnight to snag the best deals.
This year, in a semi-empty store, I picked up a few things: a much-needed new monitor, a new keyboard, some stationery, etc. The monitor was a decent deal, but everything else was either full price or barely disco... It was just convenient to get everything in one place and all at once (buying office stuff isn't exactly my idea of shopping therapy, so the shorter it takes, the better  ). For bigger purchases, I usually try to buy during Black Friday-ish sales or on Cyber Monday as long as they can wait. Also, since both fall near the end of the year, it can be convenient to make certain purchases before year-end for financial planning purposes. ▲ Collapse

I buy stuff when I need it and I try to keep my number of physical, material possessions to a minimum.
I also do not support mindless US-style consumerism, especially when it is connected to a US holiday that has no relevance whatsoever where I live.

I had been thinking of upgrading one of the most important applications I use (which keeps my whole life organised for me) and by pure coincidence I discovered that until the end of today (01 December) it was offered at a 50% "Black Friday" discount - so I paid !!!

Yes, down here since November started, we have had several "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" sales organized by different marketplaces and supermarkets, and it usually lasts until December 23rd night, when shopping centers are open until 3 am so people can buy the Christmas/Three Kings' Day gifts, even though we do not celebrate Halloween or Thanksgiving.
Here, it's clearly much more purely commercial than related to those USA traditions; it's the way stores have to sell all their remaining stock and make room for the new 2026 products.
So, yes, I take advantage of the discounts and buy stuff, but I didn't buy anything work-related.
