As I said in my reply to yesterday's post, I did not do so, as I do not intend to renew my membership, which expires on 22 December.

Proz no longer serves the interests of translators, so it is better to use the membership fee for something more useful and productive.

Happy holidays to all of you

Have you finally exhausted the long series about IA and replaced it by questions about the «new»* website?

* In Portuguese, we have an expression for endless tasks, stemming from the centuries-long construction of the Church of Saint Engratia in Lisbon, now the National Pantheon: «obras de Santa Engrácia» (works of Saint Engratia).

Website Dec 12, 2025

I normally avoid answering similar questions 2 days in a row, but I will make an exception for the new website project that has been irritating me endlessly because nothing comes of it: I'm not interested in any new page until the website is fully implemented. Asking the opinion of Proz members might be a good idea in the beginning, but not years after the announcement of said website. Asking the opinion of Proz members might be a good idea in the beginning, but not years after the announcement of said website. Most people start with a concept before developing a website, not while they are developing it.

The communication about this new website has been terrible, so there are 2 options: either site owners don't know how to communicate properly, or all this intermittent communication and apparent patchwork is meant to create a mirage of activity.

I go for the latter because, after months and even years, not a single thing points at the opposite.

Yes I have explored it (: Dec 12, 2025

I have indeed been exploring the 'new/next' site in recent weeks, and contributing to some of the other forum threads started by site staff.

The overall 'look and feel' of the 'new/next' site design has been attracting most attention here in the forum. I have indeed been exploring the 'new/next' site in recent weeks, and contributing to some of the other forum threads started by site staff.

The overall 'look and feel' of the 'new/next' site design has been attracting most attention here in the forum. And most of the comments have been very negative, even to the point of inferring that the developers have been given a free hand to do whatever they like without regard to the professional translator's natural working habitat (a desktop computer, large high-resolution screen(s), high-information-density UIs in the tools of their trade (CAT tools, word-processors, etc.), and that the result is utterly inappropriate in our professional working environment.

But there are worse problems than that. If we (try to) ignore the ghastly look and feel of the 'new/next' profile page, and we take a close look at the actual data - data which we entrusted to Proz.com for incorporation in their platform as part of our business strategy - we discover that some of that data, which displays correctly in the 'old/classic' site, is being displayed incorrectly in the 'new/next' site causing, amongst other things, the misrepresentation of our service offerings.

As a multilingual website developer/administrator myself, I am very much aware of the kinds of problems that can - and do - arise when revamping the look and feel of the user interface while at the same time (as seems to be the case here on Proz.com) upgrading the database(s) containing sensitive personal and business data (especially, but not exclusively) in the user's/members' profiles.

A variant of the Pareto principle is at play in this process. In essence, 20% of the developer's effort goes into building something that actually works properly. The other 80% goes into ensuring that when the development is complete, it will continue to function correctly, reliably and above all securely.

The golden rule here is to make sure the darned thing at least works properly (that initial 20%) BEFORE anything goes public.

It beggars belief that the embryonic 'new/next' profile page is being trialled LIVE, in full view of the global Internet community, even before that first 20% of the job is complete. And there isn't even a warning on the page to inform visitors that the page is still under development and is NOT a true representation of our profile data.

Cosmetic changes Dec 12, 2025

Cosmetic changes are fine if all else is okay. But it's far from it.

It's kinda become embarrassing at this stage.

And I've no intention of even checking out the new page, as oftentimes in the past it was difficult to go back to the "old" view.

I agree.

The "new/Next" website is far worse than the current website. I tried to answer a KudoZ question a couple of weeks ago there, and it didn't accept any tilde as used in Spanish. I mean, c'mon, it is a language site, how come languages can't be properly typed in there!
After years of development, it doesn't work with languages other than English, as if it were only useful for AI trash. It's so disappointing and, actually, sad.

Please, don't force us to use it!

On principle, the content on the Classic and Next sites is the same — both pull from the same underlying database, so you shouldn’t need to search in two different places.

That said, the Job Opportunities page on the Next site is designed to consolidate items that are a bit more spread out on the Classic site. For example, pro bono projects and calls for applications currently appear in different areas on Classic, but on the Next site they’re grouped together and can be filtered more easily.

At this stage, it’s still more common for something to appear on the Classic site but not yet be fully reflected on the Next site. If you notice anything missing or incomplete on the Next version, please feel free to let us know at proz.com/help —it really helps us identify migration issues.

And of course, if at any point new features or content are exclusive to the Next site (such as the new profile sections under development), we’ll notify all users once they’re fully ready to use.

Regarding the concerns about typing in KudoZ and language support on the Next site, we genuinely appreciate the feedback, and please don’t worry —the Next site won’t be considered “finished” until full character compatibility is in place. The database and the Classic site were developed over many years with robust multilingual support, while some of the newer technologies used for the Next site don’t yet handle all languages out of the box. We keep finding these gaps and fixing them as we go.

KudoZ, in particular, is still one of the areas that needs the most work on the Next site. We appreciate everyone’s patience while we continue improving it; not only to preserve all Classic functionality, but also to strengthen its connection to glossaries, searches, and make the overall experience more intuitive.

The "new" site has just been imposed on me Dec 12, 2025

It may well be that the two sites 'pull from the same underlying database', but as mentioned in other comments I've posted about the 'next' site in the past few days, the information displayed to visitors/colleagues is not necessarily identical.

In my own case, for example, my service offer shown in the 'next' site is an inaccurate rendering of the database record (whereas the 'classic' display is correct), and my entire bio - which was correctly displayed in the 'next' site yesterday - has completely disappeared today (instead I see an invite to add a bio...) - although it is still displayed in the 'classic' site. So, we have systemic errors in the interpretation of data pulled from the database, and erratic/unreliable mechanisms for the rendering of database content.

I suggest - nay, strongly recommend - that until such time as Proz management has given a formal commitment to the effect that the 'next' site is fully 'fit for purpose', all pages displayed to visitors should carry a prominent 'work in progress' warning and a clearly visible link to the equivalent page in the 'classic' site where any actual job-hunting or other business should be conducted.

I wonder if the developers and management at Proz.com realize that if you cannot guarantee that our carefully crafted business data is correctly rendered in the 'next' site, then every single user/member who has set up an account on this site will need to verify and adjust their account info...?

Reporting jobs Dec 12, 2025

That's the reason why I don't report jobs anymore, as I was unable to access the usual report page. It seems there's an automatic, forced redirection to the "new/Next" site when clicking the report job link.

Since I don't want to be forced to interact with it, I was unable to report jobs.
Instead of making things easier, ProZ seems to choose the other way.

'next' support page Dec 12, 2025

AllegroTrans wrote:

I had the same experience a few weeks ago. After poking around a bit I figured they're using a new support management tool in the 'next' site and have abandoned the old system (or at least blocked the entry of any new support requests).

I also found that to get into the 'next' support page I had to log out of the site (regardless of whether I was on the 'classic' or the 'next' version), navigate away from proz.com altogether and then navigate directly to the new 'next' support page where I was confronted by a log-in dialogue for 2-factor authentication. That wasn't possible at first because it demanded an email as username and a password, but I had not registered any email address for this purpose on this site. I forgot about it for a few days and tried again - and this time there was also the option to use my old proz username and password instead of an email address.

Having done that and got access to the support system, I had no problem returning to the 'classic' site, simply by repeatedly hitting my browser's 'return' button (or picking an old link to a 'classic' page from my browser history). IOW, we're forced to use the 'next' support system, but doing so doesn't commit us to a lifetime away from the comfort and usability of the 'classic' site.

Oh, and by the time I got into the system I'd forgotton why I wanted to submit a ticket in the first place. Grrr...

As usual, of course, there has been zero information from Proz about all this.

Another "bug" - but also a serious breach of confidentiality Dec 12, 2025

Looking at my profile ("old" site) shows my location as United Kingdom.

But looking at my profile on the "new" site this has been replaced with a town name - something that although correct, I NEVER put into my profile. This is just not acceptable.

This goes to the issue of data protection raised by Jennifer.

SITE STAFF - please remove all links to the "new" pages until the whole new site is properly written and 100% safe and tested.
