What public image? Mar 1

Do professional translators even have a "public image"? I wouldn't have thought so.

This is probably just another poorly-framed question that was intended to ask about something else. Any guesses?

May I suggest that Proz start by using AI to strengthen its public image among its members and then let us know what the outcome was?

Augmented Ignorance Mar 1

just does as told. For now.

What has further 'improved' whatever was still left of the perception of any need for human translators (at whichever level of 'professionalism') is lots of people who haven’t got the first clue about translating blindly swallowing the hype generated by people who should have a clue but are nonetheless very busy enthusiastically spreading marketing BS.

Too early to tell Mar 1

I have more confidence in the dentists who use the state-of-the-art equipment and materials. As for far-fetched excuses aimed at knocking down the price, there is always a reason for that.

Perhaps a more important question would be: Mar 1

Has AI strengthened or weakened ProZ’s own public image?
Over the past few years, many users have experienced repeated “renovations,” redesigns, and feature rollouts that introduced persistent bugs and instability.
That does far more real damage to a platform’s reputation than any external technological trend.
Before repeatedly questioning the image of translators, it might be worth asking how the platform itself is perceived by its own community, especially when users

Professional translators' public image Mar 2

Since the issue of "the image of Proz.com by translators" has popped up, I propose a new poll: "On a scale of one-to-ten, what is your image (or approval rating, as the case may be) of Proz.com? Inquiring minds want to know.

Engagement farming Mar 2

At last, this post is at least relevant to translation as a profession! Saying that, I'm not sure it's really a question of "image".

The general problem that society in general seems to be facing is not the use of AI alone, but the over-use of AI with minimal-to-no human oversight or quality brainpower in the false opinion that it is suitable for anything and everything.

Perceptions Mar 2

One of my mates asked me yesterday why I don’t just get a team of five AI bots to do all the work and then quickly proofread it.

Quite insightful really as that’s exactly what the big agencies do these days.

They do indeed Mar 2

A while ago I was in Italy and I was buying some clothes online, so it was an international brand, but the local web was in Italian. I was measuring myself to hit the right size and inseam was translated as “pear”, and waist was translated as “pathway”, I sat there all confused and then it occurred to me, a-ha “modern AI translation”. Obviously, sent directly in front of a paying customer either without any post editing or post edited by a 0.000001 amateur. Not surprised, as if they... See more

Obviously, sent directly in front of a paying customer either without any post editing or post edited by a 0.000001 amateur. Not surprised, as if they’ll suffer any consequences.

Although one time I complained about AI bot efficiency and got an extra free product because of my complaint, worth about €60. But this was customer service speed, not translation.

Ask any digital marketing expert if 5-10 people is called engagement? It’s worth nothing on a highly competitive web.

I think Trustpilot's score is quite accurate.

Especially if you discard the 'old' reviews - the ones before the slow mutation into proz.ai
