Should cover a wider range of conversions Jul 21, 2006

I am currently working on a translation to do with an aircraft crash in which it appears that the pilot was given the atmospheric pressure as xxx mm of mercury, asked what it was in millibars, is told it is yyy millibars, and is later heard to say he has set the altimeter to yyy mm. Air traffic control accepts this without comment.
So he thought he was about 500 m up when he hit the ground.

Bar and PSI and other units Jul 22, 2006

Although we should all be using SI (Système international ) units, I would advise against converting units from one system to another in a translation. In medical laboratories common tests are reported (in the UK) in SI units (molar/Litre) but in Europe (Spain at least) they still us weight/100 ml (dl). Maybe put the SI unit in brackets or vice versa (10 bar (150 psi)).
