Too many (CAPTCHA) tests to check for whether I'm genuine. Is there something else going on? Thread poster: Peter Motte

I'm getting sick and tired of having to fill in dozens of times those tests when I log in to see whether I'm genuine. Is that really only a way to make sure robots don't log in, or is there something else going on and are they using me as a cheap way to check the contents of those pictures?

I agree with you, but on the other side it’s reassuring to know that, after all, AI lacks “intelligence” to figure out those silly tests…

There is more to it than that. It's a way of AI training, as I heard saying some IT specialist on the radio a while ago. I suppose he is right. It sometimes takes me minutes to complete those tests, which is completely unnecessary if it would only be a security measurement. So I'm afraid 'reassuring' is not the right word here.

Now that you mention this, I've found that the number of Captchas increases if you're using Google as the default search engine and if you're using a VPN.
Altenatives like Firefox + other search engine (or maybe Brave?) seems to get me playing less with puzzles lately. Then that may be true for a while and then it'll change again...

TOPIC STARTER
20 times! AT LEAST 20 times I had to do that stupid catcha, not to mention all those blurry photo's on which it becomes increasingly difficult to recognize simething.
Is this a way of Proz.com to block people instead of spambots?
Or does the system simply does not work? Like lots of IT ideas, by the way. IT always thinks they can create the ideal world. And they never do.

I don’t have to do them. I always go straight into the site. I wonder why that is? What is different about our setup? Are you in “private browsing” or something?

CAPTCHAs won't "protect" you from nothing. From the user's point of view, they are nothing more than a nuisance of the first order - a right pain in the neck.
CAPTCHAs are meant to protect the website. Only small problem is, the algorithm deciding whether to throw a CAPTCHA at users is more often than not very far from being perfect. End result: a "website security" that keeps harassing legitimate users. That usually does marvels for brick and mortar businesses ...

I suppose you don't erase your browsing history systematically ? Then it is normal that you don't have to do that every time. But if you erase that history every single day (like I do), you will have to pass that test every next morning.

If the question about CAPTCHA tests relates to proz, then well, I've never had to take one. However, the huge number of weird queries I have to enter into Google's search box to get my work done sometimes makes Google question the fact that I'm a human being, even to the point where I have to identify all pictures showing a motorcyclist where the only thing appearing on the screen is a cemetery (and zero motorcycles).
