Hello everybody,
This question has been already asked hundreds times but after browsing the forum, I am sort of unable to find a definite answer. I would like to hear from colleagues involved in subtitling based in the UK how much they are paid per minute/or subtitle (I'm interested in translating subtitles only, no spotting or cueing). So, if fellow subtilers could reveal rates in GBP, I would appreciate it.

I've been subtitling for the US based subtitling company but I've been asked by the UK-based subtitling company to quote. I haven't got a clue how much subtitlers in the UK are paid. Should I convert a US dollars rate and use it? But I think, the rates in the US are usually lower than in the UK.
Thank you.

Hi, Dominika.
I've never subtitled for agencies/companies in the UK, so I cannot tell what the standard rate is there. I think you should estimate the number of hours the work will take you and then quote on a rate per hour basis.

I have never actually subtitled for a company in the UK, but I heard of a company which pays around 4 pounds per minute. I don't really know if it is a standard rate in the UK though...
Cheers,

I'm in Brazil, so any figures would be meaningless. However I can give you an idea on the variation we have here.
I work mostly - if not wholly - with corporate video, i.e. institutional, technical, training. Let's say my rate per minute of total playing time is X.
Some rather careless film distributors/TV channels use rookies or rogue translators who get X/3. Most of the acceptable commercial video is translated at 0.5~0.8X. Some rather careless film distributors/TV channels use rookies or rogue translators who get X/3. Most of the acceptable commercial video is translated at 0.5~0.8X. Some true specialists in rather shady areas of human knowledge charge 1.3X. And I know a translator who charges 2X, because of the disgusting (and barely workable) audio quality she usually gets from her clients.
So any local information you get about this should be adjusted to the market you intend to serve, IF there is the same kind of variation in the UK.
Pozdrowienie!
